Colonial-dreams and counter-dreams on film and video is one of the international focal directions presented by DIAGONALE 07 - in cooperation with Forum Stadtpark - this year. In addition, the autonomous video-archive OVNI (Barcelona) will be invited to present a part of its extensive collection from the 16th - 25th of March.
Conceptualised and curated by Ascan Breuer/ Dokumentarisches Labor and Eva Simmler, space-design by Christian Bretter & Christian Ganzer.
The OVNI film-archive collection sees the intertwining of film-material from colonial times, produced in the perspective of the rulers with contemporary political documentaries by independent film-makers from the former colonial territories. Here, dreams of power directly meet with dreams of freedom and autonomy.
The collection of almost 200 videos can be viewed at screening locations individually and free of charge. During the festivals closing weekend from 23rd - 25th of March, the most important works will be shown once again in an open screening. Co-curator Eva Simmler will present a selection of Austrian videos spanning from activist-statements, experimental-artistic perspectives and examples of insightful and self-reflective documentaries; all together political expressions against hegemony and lethargy, according to Simmler.
Most films have never or scarcely been seen in Austria; one being the classic documentary of anti-colonialism Afrique 50 (F 1950, Saturday, 24th of March, 8:10pm), for which, at the time, filmmaker René Vautier went to prison and which remained unseen for many years. Also, Re:Looking (Malaysia 2002; Saturday, 24th of March, 5:30pm) by Hoy Cheong Wong which was previously barely noticed in Austria although this documentary satire reveals how the small country of Austria was occupied for almost 300 years by the Malaysian colonial-empire.
It is by no means the intent of the two curators to compile a collection of rarities and the unusual. The opportunity should rather be used to give new impulse to a belated Austrian post-colonial discourse in an international comparison. According to Breuer, the awareness of the heritage of colonial cinema as well as the achievements of the Third Cinema barely exists within the national film-world.
Hence there will also be lectures and discussions. From differing viewpoints, each will debate the relevance of colonial heritage as well as that of the Third Cinema, which revolts against the usual hegemonic viewpoints and rules, for Austrian film.
